Camping
Camping is a fundamental part of Scouting and every section and the children in the sections get the opportunity to spend time away camping each year in a safe and exciting environment, sometimes indoors but mainly outdoors in tents.
It is important that when the children are away with the sections they are properly equipped. Leaders provide a kit list for every camp and parents should read these kit lists carefully and speak to the leaders if there are any questions about the kit or the camp requirements.
It is important that parents encourage their children to pack the kit or at least be involved in packing so they know what they have when they arrive and unpack at camp.
One of the most important things on camp is to be warm at night. Temperatures can drop overnight and change. It is important they stay warm especially during the night, to ensure the children get a good night’s sleep.
One of the most important things to stay warm during the night is the sleeping bag. Good sleeping bags are rated with seasons 1-5 with 1 suitable for very warm nights and indoors through to 5 for extremely cold weather. For most camps in the UK children should have a season 3 sleeping bag. For Winter camping a season 4 sleeping bag is recommended.
